I am interested in the purpose of pain.

The pursuit of happiness is a road filled with many trials and tribulations but without pain we would never know what true happiness is.  Mental health issues still have stigma attached but I believe they exist because we are taught to see pain as a purely negative thing.  Pain can make us bitter, angry, depressed and sick or it can transform us into stronger, more emphatic, wiser and healthier human beings, depending on how we deal with it.  A seed when planted in the ground is broken and crushed beyond recognition and after a period of darkness beauty comes.

My work looks at the positive transformation caused by pain. We have many ways of dealing with it including drugs and alcohol, counselling, positive thinking, meditation, prayer, anger, overeating, under eating, self hatred, self harm, suicide etc a few will lead to healing but many will lead to more pain. So why do some people grow through the pain process and some are overwhelmed by it. Does our attitude to it matter.?

I use discarded, worthless, waste materials in my installations and wall art to reveal not only the process of pain but the result. I want the work to glorify the positive transition of facing pain, dealing with it and growing through it. No one is immune to pain and my work recognizes the huge struggle that every viewer has gone through but also pays homage to the radical change that can take place. I want to invite the viewer to question the world view of pain, the journey it brings us on and where it leaves us.

I am no stranger to pain, I come from a dysfunctional family,  I lost my brother when he was 18. I lost my marriage, my business, my home, and finally my health and in 2011 my family were told to prepare for my death. I spent 6 months in hospital fighting for my life. I live with Crohns disease,  Diabetes and a non functional pancreas. I have been homeless, depressed and suicidal, but I am still here.

Pain is working its purpose in me.

It was a life long dream of mine to attend art college and in 2016 I graduated from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in 2016 with an H2 Honours Bachelors Degree in Textiles Art and Artefact as a mature student.
